Electronic signature: Yousign or Documenso? (and when to integrate via API)

28 mai 20262 min read

In short

  • Two excellent choices, not one universal winner: Yousign (French SaaS, delegated compliance) vs Documenso (open-source, self-hostable).
  • Yousign if you want to integrate fast and never manage eIDAS compliance or infrastructure.
  • Documenso if sovereignty, data control, or costs at scale come first, at the price of a bit of operation.
  • The real API trigger: when the signature becomes a step in YOUR product flow (generated → signed → tracked), not an isolated manual action.

The problem, concretely

"We already use DocuSign by clicking by hand, why integrate?" Because as long as the signature lives alongside your product, you re-enter data, you forget follow-ups, and you never know at a glance where each contract stands. As soon as the signature is part of the flow (a generated quote goes out for signature, the status comes back on its own), the choice of tool and its API becomes structural. The two references for integration are Yousign and Documenso.

Yousign

A solid API, support in French, eIDAS compliance covering all three levels (simple, advanced, qualified), infrastructure hosted in Europe. Ideal for integrating fast and delegating compliance: it's the provider who bears the regulatory responsibility and the evidentiary archiving. Paid SaaS model, by volume.

Documenso

An open-source alternative, self-hostable: you keep control over the data, the code, and the costs. Relevant if sovereignty or full control matter, or if your volume makes the per-signer subscription expensive. The trade-off is honest: you inherit the operation (hosting, updates) and, for the advanced/qualified levels, the integration of a certificate provider. Freedom has an engineering cost.

How I decide (without dogma)

  • Yousign if you want the fastest, compliant, and infra-free option, and the volume stays reasonable.
  • Documenso if you want self-hosting, data control, or to amortize a large volume.

Neither is "better" in the absolute: the right choice depends on your volume, your sovereignty constraints, and the team that will operate it afterward. I have no favorite tool, I align with your context.

Which eIDAS level should you aim for? (the nuance)

The trap is over-securing. The simple signature covers the vast majority of common B2B cases; you move up to advanced or qualified when the stakes or the regulation require it (the qualified one is equivalent to a handwritten signature and reverses the burden of proof, see the eIDAS signature explained). Choosing the level per document avoids paying for needless complexity.

When to go through the API?

As soon as the signature is part of your product flow (a contract generated then signed, status tracked automatically). This is exactly the building block I run on BeForBuild.com and adapt to your application, with one or the other depending on your context.
