Ontology (AI): simple definition, taxonomy vs ontology, usefulness

5 août 20262 min read

In brief

An ontology, in computing, is a formal description of the concepts of a domain and the relations between them: entities, categories, properties. In AI, it's used to organize a company's knowledge (products, clients, procedures) so that models and humans speak the same language.

  • An ontology defines classes (e.g. "client", "contract") and their relations ("a contract is signed by a client").
  • It structures your data for AI, but it isn't necessary for a simple RAG chatbot.
  • It becomes relevant when your data is complex, multi-source, and consistency matters.
  • A taxonomy classifies; an ontology adds the relations and the rules.

The problem, concretely

In a company, the same words sometimes mean different things depending on the tool: "file" doesn't mean the same thing for sales and for customer service. An ontology brings order to this knowledge: it defines the concepts, their relations and their rules, which improves the quality of AI answers and the consistency of data.

Ontology, taxonomy, vocabulary: the differences

  • Taxonomy: a hierarchy of categories (e.g. products, families, ranges).
  • Controlled vocabulary: a list of authorized terms.
  • Ontology: the concepts + their relations + rules (e.g. "a quote belongs to a client"). It's the richest of the three.

When an ontology is useful for your AI

For a simple RAG chatbot on your documents, a formal ontology isn't necessary: semantic search is enough. It becomes useful when you connect several business sources, when your data is strongly linked (CRM, contracts, procedures) and you want consistent answers at scale. In that case, we structure the data first, then connect the AI.

Why it matters for you

Before talking ontology, the concrete need is often simpler: an assistant that answers on your documents with the source. The pipeline (indexing, search, citations) is already built and in production: I adapt it to your content, at a fixed price from €2,640 excl. tax, no subscription. If your data is complex, we structure first, at the free audit. Detail on chatbot on your documents.
