Electronic signature API: comparison for SaaS (2026)

13 juillet 20265 min read

At a glance

  • Three main APIs to integrate signing into a SaaS: Yousign (French SaaS, delegated eIDAS compliance), Documenso (open-source, self-hostable), DocuSign (US leader, mature API).
  • The choice depends on your need: delegate compliance (Yousign), control data and costs (Documenso), or rely on an established standard (DocuSign).
  • All three offer REST API + webhooks, but documentation quality and developer experience vary significantly.
  • The real cost is not the API: it is the per-signer subscription, which can explode at scale. Documenso (open-source) eliminates that line item.
  • eIDAS compliance: all three cover simple and advanced levels. Qualified signatures (legal equivalent of handwritten) require a certified provider (QTSP).

The problem, concretely

You are building a SaaS and you want your users to sign without leaving your product. The question is not "what is the best electronic signature API" but "which API integrates best with my workflow, budget, and compliance constraints". Here is an honest comparison of the three main options for developers.

Yousign: the French API, eIDAS compliant

Yousign is a French electronic signature provider, eIDAS qualified (QTSP). It is the simplest choice for a French SMB that wants to delegate regulatory compliance.

API and integration

  • Complete REST API: creating procedures, adding signers, tracking statuses, retrieving evidence.
  • Webhooks for real-time status changes (signed, refused, expired).
  • Official SDKs (PHP, Node.js) and documentation in French.
  • Embedded interface via iframe to sign without leaving your app.

Pricing

Usage-based SaaS model. No fixed public price (quoted beyond a certain volume), but per-user or per-send packages. Cost increases with signature volume, which can become expensive at scale.

Compliance

Yousign carries the regulatory responsibility: it archives the evidence and guarantees eIDAS compliance (simple, advanced, qualified). For a French B2B SaaS, this is the least risky: you do not need to manage trust infrastructure.

Documenso: the open-source, self-hostable option

Documenso is an open-source alternative to DocuSign, self-hostable. You keep full control of data and code, with no per-signer subscription.

API and integration

  • Open-source REST API, documented on GitHub.
  • Webhooks for status tracking.
  • Self-hosted on your infrastructure (Docker), or cloud version.
  • Community SDKs (Node.js, Python), documentation improving rapidly thanks to the community.

Pricing

The software is free (open-source). The cost is the hosting (a few euros to a few dozen euros per month depending on volume). For advanced and qualified levels, you need to integrate a certificate provider (QTSP), which adds a per-signature cost. But at scale, this is far cheaper than a per-signer SaaS subscription.

Compliance

Documenso supports simple and advanced signatures. For qualified, you need to connect an external QTSP. The advantage: you control where the data lives, which is crucial for GDPR and sensitive clients.

DocuSign: the established standard

DocuSign is the market leader, with the most mature and documented API. It is the safe choice for large enterprises.

API and integration

  • Very complete REST API, exhaustive documentation, official SDKs in all major languages.
  • Connect (webhooks) robust, supports filters and multiple formats.
  • Advanced templates, conditional fields, complex signer routing.
  • 24/7 enterprise support, guaranteed SLAs.

Pricing

DocuSign is the most expensive on the market: per-user subscription + per-envelope (send) cost above quota. France 2026 pricing varies by plan (Standard, Pro, Business Premium, Enterprise). For a high-volume SaaS, it is the most costly, but also the most complete.

Compliance

eIDAS compliant via QTSP partnerships. DocuSign covers all three levels (simple, advanced, qualified). Compliance is delegated, like with Yousign.

The right choice for your situation

  • French SMB, medium volume, delegate compliance: Yousign. Simplest, compliant by default, French support, no infra to manage.
  • High-volume SaaS, data sovereignty, controlled budget: Documenso. No per-signer subscription, you host, you control.
  • Enterprise, complex routing, corporate requirements: DocuSign. The most mature API, but the most expensive.
  • Hybrid: you can also use Yousign for compliance and Documenso for non-sensitive volumes. This is a scenario I see in practice.

Integrating a signature API into your SaaS

Choosing the API is one step, integration is another. The points that make a difference in production:

  • Document generation before signing: the PDF is produced from your data (quote, contract), then sent for signing. See our document generation feature.
  • Status tracking via webhook: never follow up by hand. The API notifies your app when a document is signed, refused or expires.
  • Evidence archiving: the evidence package (timestamp, certificate, IP) must be stored and retrievable — this is what gives legal value.
  • Automatic reminders: the API can trigger follow-ups without manual intervention.

This is exactly what I run on beforbuild.com and what I adapt to your application: electronic signature integrated via API, eIDAS compliant, fixed price from 990 € HT.
